"Agile Software Development" (Jolt Productivity Award 2002)
"Crystal Clear: A Human-Powered Methodology for Small Teams" (2004)
Dr. Cockburn received his Ph.D. on "People and Methodologies in
Software Development" based on project debriefings and projects run
throughout the 1990s. The results became the basis for the
"Cooperative Game" concept and were incorporated into the Agile
Development Manifesto in 2001.
Dr. Cockburn wrote one of the first agile methodologies, for the
IBM Consulting Group in 1992 based on early project debriefings. He
was lead consultant on a 1994-1995 fixed-time, fixed-price $24M
project that successfully used that methodology. Since then he has
consulted around the world on organizational design, process and
methodology design, requirements gathering and project management
(the subject of his next book). He served as special advisor to the
Central Bank of Norway, and has worked in companies from Scandinavia
to South Africa, North America to China.
In his 30-year career he has led hardware and software projects in
industry, government and in research, ranging from real-time flight
simulator computer graphics hardware, software development
environments, and in-house application software.
Internationally, he is known for his seminal work on methodologies
and use cases, as well as his lively presentations and interactive
